Abraham Accords Wishful Thinking Saudi Arabia the Reality.
After all the hype of the Abraham Accords is put into its proper perspective and Binyamin Netanyahu’s optimism that Saudi Arabia would be joining the accord shortly, we are now seeing the reality minus the hype.
Saudi Arabia has decided the United States is no longer trustworthy to uphold the U.S.-Saudi compact and is charting a course built on self-interest and their assessment of the future political alignments already forming in the Middle East.
Israel is still seen as a U.S. proxy in the region and, therefore, is perceived as a bad fit for the home of Mecca. According to Saudi assessments, the U.S. hegemony continues to erode while the balance of power falls into the sphere of the China, Russia, and Iran triumvirate.
Israel has made an error of judgement and appears to have misread the current sympathy held by the Kingdom. If this rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran continues, how long before the signatories of the Abraham Accords whistle another tune? One less palatable to Israel’s ears.
Israel must conclude that the Saudis are disengaging from any future understanding between the two nations. This may change as Iran, on the verge of obtaining a nuclear weapon, will undoubtedly flex its muscles in a contest with the Saudis and the Gulf States, not to mention the one country that stands in its way of achieving dominance in the region, the Jewish State.
Iran, along with China and a diminished Russia, are taking the least direct course for the moment: to foment discord between neighbours or potential allies and thus prevent the neighbours from getting together. At the same time, they prepare to overrun the State of Israel.
With America’s virtual withdrawal from the region during the Obama administration and Trump’s confused foreign policy to be followed by a weak Biden Whitehouse, new calculations of power are being undertaken where friends become enemies and enemies become friends.
All this occurs while media and certain political actors spread rumours and misinformation to foment discord within the Jewish State and between the United States to undermine the democratically elected government of Israel. Regardless of the Left’s use of language, espousing their democratic bona fides is more in the name of ideological purposes than of principle in its own right.
These perilous times need selfless leadership and a resolute command of the situation that lies before the Jewish Nation. Time will tell where we head next.
