Australia At The CrossRoad!

Australia is at a crossroads in its short history as a nation-state. On the 14 of October 2023, the nation will vote on a referendum to alter the Constitution to recognise the Aboriginal people of Australia by establishing a body called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Its role is to make recommendations to the Parliament and the Executive Government on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

All is not as it seems. This proposed body could quickly morph into a separate Parliament within a Parliament, thus destabilising governmental functions and placing undue pressure on government policies to reflect an unelected body’s ideological point of view.

Australia seems blithely ignorant of the potential for a minority to hold a casting vote over any proposed legislation this minority might deem unacceptable to its vision of a native Australia.

While reforms are not to be swept aside as unworthy of consideration, even though they may themselves be part of the problem Australia is trying to solve. It would be entirely unrealistic to disregard the dangerous consequences of any change to the existing constitution and the viability of the Australian Commonwealth as a nation state no matter how attractive to some in terms of principle.

In terms of practicle politics, constitutional change is no more exempt from consideration of the art of the possible than any other sphere of public activity. Thus this referendum shows all the halmarks of cancel culture based on an Aboriginal voice taking precedence over the vast majority of Australians.

If common sense is to play any part in this political charade the vote on October 14 can only be a resounding ‘No!’

Australia your future is in your hands vote with your head not your heart.

Yosef Yigal made Aliya in 2014 while Sylvia his wife is an Israeli. In late 2014 Achdut HaLev concentrated all its resources towards Aliya and the rebuilding of Eretz Yisrael. Excluding none and embracing all. The commandment to settle the Land of Israel is equal in importance to all the Torah Commandments all together: (Sifri Deut 12:29)
