Foreign Policy on the Run
As the war in Syria draws to a close, it may be a good time to analyse what this may mean for Israel in the coming years.
It was not long ago that the Presidency of Barak Obama posed the greatest threat to the Jewish States future and its strategic position in the Middle East. The Obama administration had started to adopt policies that would have eventually restricted Israels ability to defend itself and therefore leave it in an untenable position.
Barak Obama Failure to Act
Fast forward two years to July 2018 and we must ask our selves are we witnessing a potentially far more feeble-minded U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump than the erstwhile Barak Obama.
I believe the answer to that question is yes. the tipping point was realised when Trump confronted his first serious strategic challenge that came about through his surrender to Vladimir Putin’s Russia remaining unchallenged in the Syrian conflict.
Clearly, Trump has shown total disregard for U.S. national interests in making this disastrous decision and has relinquished power to Russia and more fatally disadvantaged the Jewish State vis-a-vis Russia, Iran, Turkey threatening Israel’s northern border.
When National Interest No Longer Matters
Russia is now in a position to exercise immense geopolitical power way out of proportion to its current economic strength.
All this courtesy of Donald Trump cravenly appeasing Moscow with a tacit agreement that will clear a path to Russian aggression towards the State of Israel.
Israel has up until now staked everything on containing Iran’s ambitions in the Middle East and in particular Syria while seeming to ignore the potential Russian threat that lies to our north.
The Danger to Israels North
To trust a strident Russia is wishful thinking and gambles with our peoples future.
At some point, Israel will be forced to fight and that conflict is very likely to include a belligerent coalition made up of Russia, Iran, and Turkey.
This has all come about through Barak Obama dismantling traditional Middle East U.S. Foreign policy in favour of courting Iran, while Trumps willingness to accede to Putin’s plans for Syria has all but handed the Middle East to Russia on a platter.
Common sense alone would alert one to the imminent danger that faces not only the Middle East but also the soft European underbelly that would be exposed should Trumps America behave in ways that do not reflect common sense.
This is not a time to be derisively dismissive of the crucial issue’s that confront every Jew today whether they live in the Jewish State or the fast disappearing diaspora.
The true facts show that all the unrest today is a historically recurring experience that we ignore at our peril.
I agree the whole situation is very worring!
Yochanan, I trust you had an easy fast. “Gmar Chatima Tova.”
Your right to be concerned. Unfortunately for most people its business as usual.
Either they have never learnt history nor studied Torah or they are suffering from amnesia. Either way they will find the coming reality very uncomfortable.
