TO STAY OR TO LEAVE THAT IS THE QUESTION

Why should I leave my home and go to a country that I don’t really know and for that matter hardly anyone else is moving to?

That is the question. A question every Jew will have to answer eventually.

That begs another question the longing to return to the land of Israel and the belief in its fulfilment was an integral part of Jewish life throughout the years of exile and instilled into the fabric of Jewish communities from Minsk to Johannesberg.

Three times a day Jews have turned towards Jerusalem and prayed for the return of their exiled people.

What happened? What changed? Nothing! We changed when we decided the nations we had been exiled to were no longer reminders of our national shame but rather our new homelands.

We were now Germans, Poles, Englishman and Americans…these new homelands ceased to feel like an exile and became a permanent fixture in our lives.

From now on our prayers to Worship at His holy mountain; Worship at His footstool; and He who restores His glory to Zion, etc… are like the speech of a parrot and the chattering of the starling .

These words are said without true belief in our hearts… Rav Yehuda HaLevi (Kuzari)

A thousand years have passed since those words were written and nothing has changed in fact the situation has become endemic. Time is running out and the Diaspora is running headlong into oblivion.

Without drastic action on the part of Jewish leadership to turn this doomed ship around Jewish communities outside of Israel will be unable to resist their eventual demise.

What’s to be done? Firstly all right-thinking Jews need to denounce rampant assimilation taking place in the Diaspora and make it patently clear there is no future for Jews in the Diaspora.

Only in Israel can a Jew exist and be certain his/her children will remain Jews let alone survive another conflagration in the future.

It appears we can’t wait for Jewish leadership to take up the clarion call and denounce the Diaspora as a permanent fixture and call our people Home!

If that’s so then you the thinking Jew will have to stop this self-destructive fantasy. This will need a revolution in the thinking of Jews in the Diaspora and Israel if we are to create a Jewish reality in a Jewish Land for all Jews.

That’s the question and it needs answering now!

Yosef Yigal Drever and Sylvia Drever co-founded Achdut HaLev in 2006 to reach out to the Jewish community's around the world providing support in learning Torah and promoting the 'Return of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel.' Yosef Yigal made Aliya in 2014 while Sylvia his wife is an Israeli. In late 2014 Achdut HaLev concentrated all its resources towards Aliya and the rebuilding of Eretz Yisrael. Excluding none and embracing all. The commandment to settle the Land of Israel is equal in importance to all the Torah Commandments all together: (Sifri Deut 12:29)
