A Timely Reflection on Netanyahus Leadership !

Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and United States President Donald Trump are to meet yet again to discuss a range of issues from Gaza’s future to a two-state solution later this month. It’s an opportunity to reflect on Netanyahu’s leadership as he confronts an America wanting solutions to the Middle East’s long-standing problems, and Trump wants those solutions now.

At this moment in Israel’s short history since its restoration in 1948, the Jewish State is confronted by hostile foes and friends like never before. So like him or hate him, Binyamin Netanyahu, more than anyone else, has been instrumental in rescuing the country from military and diplomatic disaster since October 7 2023, not in every situation and in all respects, but sufficiently to stabilise Israel’s internal and external security so that the setbacks it had suffered over the last two years were turned around while fighting military conflicts on seven fronts continuing hostilities are still ongoing a semblance of victory has seen Israel emerge the dominant power in the region albeit preparing for conflict with Erdogan’s Turkey sometime in the next three years.

Netanyahu will have to make the usual pacts with the devils in all his strategies, as politics is never pure. However, if his approach were unsuccessful, nothing would be.

Netanyahu’s leadership is politically astute and ruthless when necessary, but his critics accuse him of many weaknesses. Unscrupulous, irresponsible, weak, ruthless in dealing with the lives and careers of perceived political challengers to his leadership. He has been ridiculed for making conflicting promises, cynically and brazenly. If so, he has managed to use his vast public charm to make up for many of his deficiencies. All of these character traits have been levelled against him personally and against his leadership.

However, undeniably, the Prime Minister has countervailing qualities of a rare and inspiring order. Netanyahu possesses wide political horizons, an imaginative sweep, an understanding of the times we live in and of the direction of the forces at work against Israel. Statesman like this know what to do and when to do it if they are to achieve their ends and all this is why with warts and all Binyamin Netanyahu remains Israels best choice for leadership of the country.
