America Dispossessed !

From Obama through to Biden and now Trump, America is being re-invented along the lines of a dysfunctional entity. Starting with Obama, the geopolitical chessboard that had dominated the world since the end of the Second World War was reset. International security could no longer be guaranteed by the Pax Americana. The United States had entered an era of self-doubt and a lingering uncertainty about America’s staying power and sense of purpose. The Obama-Biden years were a plague of self-doubt, leading to profound doubts among friends and enemies alike about America’s reliability.

The United States foreign policy has been transformed into one in which America is solicitous of its enemies and disdainful of its traditional friends. This Jekyll-and-Hyde approach to diplomacy has led to challenges for the U.S. from China, Russia, and Iran in the North China Sea, Europe, and, critically, the Middle East. Starting with Barack Obama’s red line in Syria and more recently Bidens shamefull retreat from Afghanistan, resulting in political paralysis and more undermining of its allies and friends while cosying up to the international thugs in Tehran, Beijing and Moscow.

And now President Donald Trump strides the political stage, projecting U.S. military power at will. As he wields America’s economic influence to shape other countries’ policies in pursuit of his vision for America First. Unfortunately, he pursues this agenda without subtlety or consideration of other nations’ interests because he can. However, as Napoleon Bonaparte found out too late, the tide always turns and, in doing so, often drowns those too arrogant to see the winds of change. Trump may well be an aberration that passes without a trace in the next three years.

Be it a Democrat or a Republican sitting in the White House after Trump, one thing is certain: the global state of affairs will have become that much more dangerous and unpredictable.
