Trumps Concept of Order in the World !
In the first 100 days of the Trump Administration, the President has played a decisive, if erratic, role in reshaping the contemporary world order while professing ambivalence about participating in it.
While Donald Trump appears to be imbued with the conviction that he and he alone can shape mankind’s destiny, he plays a paradoxical role. One minute, he seems to project American hegemony; the next, he signals an isolationist mindset. Trump is not afraid to conduct power politics and is prepared to bully world leaders when he perceives their weakness. He sees them in adversarial terms, particularly those considered allies, while turning a blind eye to the likes of Putin’s Russia.
The diplomatic mayhem created by Trump’s erratic behaviour facilitates a perception that foreign policy is optional, treating it as a series of episodic challenges rather than a permanent enterprise. Diplomacy and force in this conception are distinct stages of action, each following its own autonomous rules. Iran is a point in question.
Trump would appear to want the world to transform, making an American strategic role unnecessary. What does this mean for an Israel addicted to American support? It means that the United States has no interest in protecting Israel’s interests beyond U.S. national interests, strictly defined. President Trump, for all his rhetoric supporting Israel, is no more inclined to sacrifice American self-interest for Israel’s sole benefit than any previous American president. The writing is on the wall, it’s up to the Jewish State to adjust to the new realities and act accordingly with one eye on the future.
