Iran in Play !

Whatever one’s thoughts on Iran, be it a supporter or, like myself, an avid opponent of the Islamic Republic of Iran, one thing we can all agree on is that Iran is now in play. Protests aside, America has decided to go for regime change and is cranking up a propaganda campaign before unleashing the dogs of war. Does this mean boots on the ground, no, rather a war of attrition undermining Iran’s leaders’ hold on the people of Iran through covert operations and continued propaganda designed to convince the domestic societies of the West of Iran’s imminent collapse.

If there is to be any military action, it will come from the skies above Tehran. Part of the propaganda war is the deification of Reza Pahlavi, Crown Prince of Iran, reminiscent of the anointing of the now forgotten Ahmed Chalabi, an exiled Iraqi politician who had won the hearts of the neo-cons at the centre of the George W Bush administration. Chalabi was successful in convincing the Americans of his overwhelming support in Iraq, and with CIA support, was transported to Iraq with a handful of armed supporters who quickly found they had no credible backing from the general populace and quickly became irrelevant.

Now, Trump’s America runs the risk of backing another peripheral candidate for leadership should the Mullahs be sent packing. The question should be asked: Where is the proof that Reza Pahlavi has the support of the majority of Iran’s diverse population? This question was never asked of Ahmed Chalabi whose moment in the sun ended in obscurity and irrelevance in Iraqi politics. If not careful, Trump may well rue the day he backed Reza Pahlavi.

The Mullahs in Tehran are not done yet and may prove more resilient than the Chalabis of this world.
