Has NATO Met its Use Buy Date ?
President Donald Trump’s unsophisticated approach to Europe has, as a consequence, put NATO’s future in question and possibly destabilised the West’s security while damaging relations between America and its longstanding allies. As Sun Tzu once said, “while an angered man may again be happy, and a resentful man again be pleased, a state that has perished cannot be restored, nor can the dead be brought back to life.” This thought may well be applied to Trump’s reaction to Europe’s reticence in supporting the United States in its conflict with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Whatever the future holds for the U.S.-Europe relationship, both sides are walking a tightrope without a safety net.
It behoves cooler heads to undertake good judgment as a balancing act that would require rethinking core assumptions while preserving NATO’s original core purpose. This will require common sense by all parties holding a stake in the future of Western polity.
If the leaders concerned fail to resolve their differences, they should fear the future!
