Israels Right to Self-Defence ?

We hear much about Israel’s right to self-defence from world leaders and social commentators as if Israel requires the ascent of nations and public opinion to bestow this right upon one country and one nation alone. Bringing into question the legitimacy of that right when it regards the Jewish State.

We find ourselves in the presence of a pernicious double standard being applied to Israel alone amongst the nations. No other country requires America or the European Union to state its right to defend its people and sovereign borders as stated in International law. Self-defence refers to the inherent right of a State to use force in response to an armed attack. Self-defence is one of the exceptions to the prohibition against the use of force under Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and customary international law.

Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter states Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of collective or individual self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a member of the United Nations until the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to maintain international peace and security.

Israel needs no entity to confirm its right to self-defence or, in the case of the current conflict in Gaza, International approval to undertake that self-defence. The conflict must be premised on the fact that the ”fundamental conflict” is ”of right with right.” Israel makes every effort to comply with the rule of law in all its military undertakings.

Finally, no matter what Israel does or what International law allows, unequivocally, American leaders will rattle on pontificating Israel’s right to self-defence while ignoring the fact that the right is assured in the United Nations Charter regardless of their empty statements on Israel’s rights under International law.

Sadly, a growing majority of people desire nothing short of Israel’s destruction. Leaving the Jewish State to defend itself by itself!

Yosef Yigal Drever and Sylvia Drever co-founded Achdut HaLev in 2006 to reach out to the Jewish community's around the world providing support in learning Torah and promoting the 'Return of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel.' Yosef Yigal made Aliya in 2014 while Sylvia his wife is an Israeli. In late 2014 Achdut HaLev concentrated all its resources towards Aliya and the rebuilding of Eretz Yisrael. Excluding none and embracing all. The commandment to settle the Land of Israel is equal in importance to all the Torah Commandments all together: (Sifri Deut 12:29)
