Russia Israel Heading for Divorce!
Russia and Israel have had a marraige of convenience since October 2015, when Israel and Russia agreed to co-ordinate their respective air campaigns within Syrian airspace avoiding accidental clashes between the two airforces. Putin went so far as to put on record in June 2016, where he described Israel and Russia as ”unconditional allies” in ”efforts to counter international terrorism.” This love fest continued unabated till September 2018 when cracks in relations between the two countries appeared over the loss of a Russian military plane due to Israel putting it in the path of Syrian air defence systems during an Israeli strike on Hezbollah targets in Syria. Putin initially absolved Israel of any responsibility for the aircraft downing. However, Russia followed up by upgrading Syrian air defence capabilities installing the S-300 missile system over Israeli objections. Since then there have been a growing list of differences between the two countries culminating in Israel’s half hearted support for Ukraine.
Now Russia and Israel are heading for a messy divorce over Israels determined efforts to destroy Hamas after its murderous attack on Israeli citizens last October 7th. Russia does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization nor does it consider the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas against men, women and children a war crime.
On October 16, Russia drafted a U.N. Security Council resolution that called for a humanitarian ceasfire between Hamas and Israel. The Russian sponsored resolution failed to pass on Monday. This will not be the last effort to defeat Israel in the Security Council. Ultimately Israel stands in the way of Russia’s ambitions for dominating the Levant and along with its allies Iran, China, and not far behind Erdogans Turkey are committed to removing the obstacle that hinders their strategic plans from being fulfilled. For them the Jewish State must go.
At the moment Putin is biding his time as he looks for a way to achieve victory in Ukraine, the Chinese wait as well and are casting a wary eye on the the United States Aircraft carrier task force now in the Mediteranean. Which has posed a question are the Americans back after an absence of ten years? Will they actually talk the talk and walk the walk? Thats what China’s leader Xi Jinping and Irans Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei want’s to know before they throw the dice.
In the meantime Israel and Russia head for the Divorce Court!
