When the Dreamers take control, the Realists show contempt.

In this Shabbat, we will read Parshat Vayeshev, where we see Yosef’s brothers mock him for dreaming of realities they could not comprehend in their worldview. “And they said one unto the other, ‘Behold the dreamer cometh….’ ” Bereshit (Genesis) 37:19.

It strikes me that today we see the same inability of some Jews to appreciate the vision for the Jewish State that Itamar Ben Gvir, Besalel Smotrich and Avi Maoz dream of.

Yair Lapid, Benny Gantz and most recently, Israel’s Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara have turned their venom on these men who the people of Israel elected on November 1 to govern the state according to their campaign promises. They are incapable of appreciating Smotrich and Ben Gvir dream, dreams of a truly Jewish State capable of becoming a Light unto the nations.

These realists can only offer cynicism and doubt in their criticism of these Jewish patriots. They mock their dream for Israel. They are deprecating these dreamers with ridicule and slander. They have no appreciation of the Hasmoneans, Chanukah’s heroes, or Avraham’s unbending faith in the promise of Israel’s G-d.

No, these brothers of Yosef only know how to scoff and belittle men and women of authentic Jewish values. They have no faith and little belief. We should all be thankful that we have leaders who dream of what can be just like Yosef.
